We have her to thank for it: at a banquet in February 1545, Catherine de Medici (1519 – 1589) demanded that a fork be used as table cutlery. This spectacular event caused a great deal of discussion and the introduction of the fork as a princely eating utensil.
A chronicler in France tells us about the common practice before Catherine: “While I was eating a succulent roast, I noticed four gentlemen who never once touched the meat with their fingers. They brought forks to their mouths and bent low over their plates. As I had no experience, I didn’t dare to imitate them and just ate with my knife.”
